How to Choose Online Voting Software for a Pageant

What does a pageant need that a generic poll tool cannot do?

Most free poll widgets fail a pageant on the same five points:

• Contestant profiles. A pageant vote is not a list of options — it needs photographs, galleries and biographies, because supporters arrive to look at a person.
• Per-contestant share links. Contestants campaign individually, and both they and you need to see which votes came through their own link.

How should you test a platform before committing?

Run a rehearsal with three fictional contestants and a handful of real people. It takes an afternoon and tells you more than any demo.

7. 7Look at the vote record afterwards and see whether you could answer a challenge from it

That last step is the one organisers skip and later regret. Being told there is an audit trail is not the same as seeing whether it answers a question.

• A claim that duplicate voting is impossible — nobody can deliver that on a public page
• No way to see individual vote records
• Vote limits described only as a browser setting
• Paid votes credited before payment confirmation
• No answer on who can change totals internally
• A page that fails on a phone, where most pageant votes are cast
